The Televisual Factual Festival, taking place at BAFTA from 11-12 November, brings together leading commissioners and producers in the business of making factual TV to explore and discuss the future shape of programming and the business of making TV at home and internationally.

In the opening session, head of factual and deputy chief creative officer for Channel 4 Ralph Lee, together with acting controller of factual commissioning at the BBC Alison Kirkham will set the scene with an overview of the significant issues and demands for factual shows and producers.

Interviews with Channel 5 director of programmes Ben Frow and BBC 4 channel editor Cassian Harrison will give insight into how their needs are evolving and what direction they see for factual on their channels.

The Festival’s Documentary, Popular Factual and Specialist Factual panels will hear from the leading commissioners in their genres, from both national and international broadcasters. The international Commissioning session will find out from three of the industry’s biggest broadcasters - Scripps, Discovery and Turner, what their plans are in the UK and Europe and the opportunities for UK producers.

This year, the Festival will take a closer look at two of the world’s most dynamic TV markets - Asia and South America - with speakers from one of China’s biggest broadcasters and from Grupo Imagen which is creating TV services from scratch in Mexico. Alongside them, UK producers who have worked in these markets will give their perspective.

Our US session will hear from a leading US-UK lawyer and an agent working as head of TV, London for international talent agency ICM Partners, together with UK producers with unmatched experience of working in the US market.

With new streams of documentary opening up on internet platforms, a panel including Channel 4 and the Guardian will see where there are places for factual film makers to get a commission that will run online and explore the ground rules for making films that will take hold of an online audience.

As factual film makers now have more choice to use powerful and adaptable broadcast cameras and the technology to deploy them with creative vision, a panel of expert producers discusses some of the most effective ways to harness new technology - from animatronic turtles to aerial approaches via drone, new uses of the game-changing rig and how to bring Hollywood values with cinematic techniques.

If you’re an indie and want to grow, or if you’re interested in starting an indie business, then we will be finding out what the elements are that make a really great TV business, with insight from producers at the top of their game and from recent start-ups that are making waves in the industry after just a few years.
