Submissions are now open for IWM Short Film Festival 2018, described as “a showcase of imaginative and challenging films, inspired by the cause, course and consequences of conflict and its impact on lives.”
With 2018, the centenary of Armistice, the 2018 Festival will be part of IWM’s Making a New World season, which will explore the impact of the First World War.
Professionals, amateurs and students from across the world are encouraged to enter their short films into the competition, which will form part of IWM’s season of programming in 2018.
Films will be judged in two categories, The Annie Dodds Award for Best Documentary and Best Creative Response, with four additional awards for Best Use of IWM Archive, Best Student Film and the Audience Vote Award. The IWM Special Category: Making a New World encourages cinematic responses exploring how the First World War has shaped the society we live in today. Filmmakers entering IWM Short Film Festival are eligible to use up to five films, five photographs and three sound recordings free of charge from IWM’s collections.
A curated package of previously shortlisted films from IWM Short Film Festival 2017 are also being shown on Wednesday 6 December at Picturehouse Central in London. Picturehouse Cinemas and IWM are presenting the most relevant and inspiring films relating to war and conflict, as shortlisted for IWM Short Film Festival 2017.
Films must be submitted through FilmFreeWay before 27 April 2018. IWM will announce the Festival programme picked by a panel of expert judges in Autumn 2018; the screenings of the shortlisted films will take place at IWM London soon after.
Matt Lee, IWM Short Film Festival Director said, “This year’s Festival has been astoundingly successful, and we are keen to build upon this success with even more striking and thought-provoking films. As the centenary of Armistice approaches, films relating to war and conflict have never been more relevant, and we are anticipating a range of emotive and compelling entries.”
