The Disney version of Sondheim's Into the Woods, directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago), is to be based at Shepperton and begins shooting in the UK in September.

The feature will star Meryl Streep as the witch, with Johnny Depp as the big bad wolf (Depp starred in Tim Burton's 2007 film adaptation of Sondheim's Sweeney Todd). Other cast members include Emily Blunt, Jake Gyllenhaal and Chris Pine.

Marshall is using a screenplay by James Lapine, who directed and wrote the libretto for the original Broadway play.

The musical has been in development twice before with studios. First with American Zoetrope in 1994 with Penny Marshall lined up to direct. Then Sony Pictures and Jim Henson Productions picked up the rights in the mid nineties, with director Rob Minkoss lined up  (the three little bigs to be animatronic).

The Disney version is set for a Christmas Day 2014 release
