Quantel acquires Snell

Quantel, manufacturer of news and sports production and high end post production systems, has acquired standards conversion kit manufacturer Snell to create a new force in broadcast and technology with a turnover of £100m.

According to Quantel CEO Ray Cross the acquisition will enable the combined business to offer customers a complete product range to create, version and deliver high quality content efficiently across multiple platforms.

Cross said: “This acquisition brings two great companies together to create a major new force in the global broadcast and media technology market. This will enable us to better serve Quantel and Snell customers around the globe.”

In addition to its widely used standards conversion brand Alchemist, Snell manufacturers a wide range of broadcast and media technology.

The acquisition will enable Quantel to incorporate Snell's range of Live TV production and content creation, management and distribution solutions on tablets, mobile and the web.

“Our product ranges are entirely complementary so the Snell and Quantel brands and product ranges will continue," said Cross.

Snell CEO Simon Derry (pictured) will leave the business, but Paul Martin, managing director of the Snell TV Everywhere division and Robert Rowe, managing director of the Snell Live TV division, will join the Quantel board.

Snell sales director Tim Banks and Snell finance director Peter Fredericks are also taking leading roles.

The new company with a combined turnover of over £100m will be based at Quantel’s HQ in Newbury and in 16 countries across the world.
