ITV has commissioned October Films for a new series, Trauma:Level One (w/t), filmed at University Hospital Southampton's trauma unit.

October has exclusive access to the unit, which is one of just 12 specialist major trauma units for adults and children in the UK. The unit is staffed round the clock with a full range of specialist nurses, consultants and surgeons, providing emergency treatment exclusively to patients with life-threatening injuries.

Trauma: Level One was commissioned by Ian Squires, ITV’s controller of Current Affairs and News Operations. Denman Rooke is executive producer, Jane McGoldrick series producer and Rebecca Hayman is producer.

The observational documentary series follows the stories of patients, their families and the emergency team treating them for severe injuries sustained in motorway crashes, paragliding accidents and motorbike and cycling collisions – from the moment paramedics arrive on the scene to the time they are discharged.

Ian Squires said: "This is the story of the day life changes forever and we have been privileged to see it from all sides - from the perspectives of the specialist medical teams who are making the critical interventions, from the relatives of those involved and from the patients themselves, the people who, without warning, are overtaken by the most disastrous events. It is a sharp insight into the modern approach to emergency medicine - as well as the power of the human spirit."

The series is due to transmit in the summer and will be distributed internationally by Cineflix Rights.
