Nexus Interactive Arts director Evan Boehm has released the short online film Mannequin Protest, documenting his installation project for the Cotton or Nothing campaign created by DDB New York for Cotton Incorporated – America’s Cotton Producer’s and Importers – which took place during the recent New York Fashion Week.

The film – which comprises a mix of live action, time lapse and stop-motion animation – involves a group of real-life protesting mannequins and members of the general public, and is the legacy piece of the protest installation that was designed to draw consumer and media attention to the fact that manufacturers are increasingly substituting cotton with cheap substitute textiles.

Cotton or Nothing launched with an installation protest in the Meatpacking District, at 14th Street and Hudson, during NYC Fashion Week. Working with DDB, Evan came up with the idea to create an installation of protesting mannequins that would also involve the general public through the production of a stop-motion short film covering the protest.

The short film follows the shop mannequins as they shed their clothes in protest at the cheaper fabrics, and take to the street with placards where members of the public then join in by holding up the signs to show their support.

Evan Boehm, director, says: “I was really excited by this opportunity to create something that would grab people’s attention at the time – especially in the midst of NYC Fashion Week, where everyone is competing to be noticed. I wanted the public to become central to the piece and not just passive onlookers. The narrative becomes so much more real when you can step into the story and become a protester, an active participant. The use of the stop-motion allowed me to blend the real and the imaginary, and bring the public and the mannequins together into one creative piece.”
