Netflix will have 700 original titles on its service by the end of 2018, according to the streaming giant’s CFO David Wells who was speaking at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference.

Netflix has already announced that it intends to spend around $8bn globally on producing and licensing content this year.

He said that many of those shows and movies would be Netflix owned originals. “Doing more of our own benefits us economically. We have the ability to launch globally, we don’t have country windows to deal with. We’re a global product, we like launching globally and making it available to Netflix members all at the same time.” But, he said, the company was agnostic about whether content was licensed or Netflix produced.

However, he said to expect “continued owned original growth” and that although it was unlikely originals would ever be the whole picture “Could it be more than 50%? It could.”

Wells also said that “there’s no magic line,” in terms of the amount of spending Netflix would stop at.
