Netflix has signed on as a co-producer to ITV and Red Production Company's conspiracy thriller Paranoid, created by writer Bill Gallagher (The Paradise, Lark Rise to Candleford).

The eight-part drama will premiere on ITV in the UK and worldwide, outside of the UK, on Netflix later this year.

Paranoid is produced by Tom Sherry (Prey, Ordinary Lies, Scott & Bailey) and executive produced by Bill Gallagher alongside Red Production Company founder Nicola Shindler (Happy Valley, The Five, Last Tango in Halifax).

For ITV, the series has been commissioned by Controller of Drama, Victoria Fea.

The lead director is Mark Tonderai (The Five – pictured above) alongside Kenny Glennan and John Duthie.

Paranoid marks the latest in a series of drama investments in the UK by streaming giants Netflix and Amazon. Yesterday, Amazon announced it had teamed with Sky to co-produce Britannia, while recent Netflix co-pros include Watership Down with BBC1.

Paranoid is set in the small fictional town of Woodmere, where detectives Michael Niles (Neil Stuke), Nina Suresh (Indira Varma), Alec Wayfield (Dino Fetscher) and Bobby Day (Robert Glenister) begin to piece together what happened on the fateful morning Doctor Angela Benton took her three-year-old son Luke to the playground.

Angela is set upon and brutally stabbed by a man whose face is covered from view. His bizarre and disturbing behaviour is noticed moments before the attack by eyewitness Lucy Cannonbury (Lesley Sharp). Lucy’s version of events instantly rings alarm bells with dedicated and compassionate cop Nina Suresh, but fellow seasoned detective Bobby Day is more willing to accept Lucy’s account of Angela’s tragic murder.

As the investigation deepens – and darkens – detectives realize they are in a mammoth battle with a formidable global foe whose dark dealings  reach into every corner of the world.
