Nab 2016: SAM pushes 4K, IP, HDR and Kula switcher

SAM is using this year’s NAB to demonstrate its 4K, IP and HDR capabilities with the launch of IP Edge as well as a focus on the new Kula switcher.

SAM describes IP Edge as a ‘technology family’ that will help the the transition to IP for production and infrastructure, “removing the complexity from hybrid and pure IP rollouts.”

Products that are IP-Edge enabled include routers, switchers, IQ Modular processing, servers and playout systems. SAM also made a big play on the fact that IP-Edge closely follows the interoperability goals of AIMS, the Alliance for IP Media Solutions, a group of manufacturers working to make sure products meet a unified set of IP broadcast standards.

SAM is also pushing its new Kula range of multi-format production switchers at NAB.  Kula comes in at a lower price point than the company’s Kahuna switcher. With SD, HD and 4K capabilities, Kula is built to complement SAM’s Kahuna switcher, but will be aimed not just at high end broadcast production and sports but also house of worship to entertainment and conference/events.

Kula has a choice of three control panels that are expandable with additional control modules from the Kahuna Range. Kula delivers up to five key layers per M/E, 20 channels of DVE and floating/auxiliary keying resources and up to 36 inputs and 18 assignable outputs, plus an internal clip and still store.

Tim Felstead, Head of Product Marketing at SAM, said, “Content is being captured and delivered in a wider range of formats than ever before and all of it within the same production workflow. Kula addresses this need by drawing on the heritage of Kahuna – namely its ability to handle any format. Added to this, we’re seeing content creation explode beyond the traditional broadcast sphere, so there are a growing number of organizations that want to benefit from high production values in order to achieve the flexibility and onscreen result they desire. Kula is an ideal solution for any of these applications, offering market-leading features at a remarkable price point.”

Kula will ship in May 2016, priced from $17K USD.
