Magicians wins BBC1 recommission and sales

Shine TV’s The Magicians has been recommissioned for a second series by BBC1, while the format has been sold to Russia and The Ukraine.

Spintrex in the Ukraine has commissioned the format, while WeiT Media in Russia has licensed the format. The Magicians also launched on SVT1 in Sweden on 1 Oct.

The Magicians will air live when it returns to BBC1 in January 2012, marking the first time a live magic show has been broadcast on TV in the UK in more than 30 years. The new season will also include live voting.

Commissioned by BBC controller of entertainment commissioning, Mark Linsey, The Magicians is produced by Shine TV and executive produced by Karen Smith, joint managing director of Shine TV, and launch producer of Strictly Come Dancing.

Shine International handles international distribution of the format and finished tape. The show has also been acquired in 50 territories including New Zealand's Sky TV, Hong Kong's TVB, MBC in the Middle East, Portugal's RTP, Australia's Fox8, Finland's TV5, Norway's TV Norge and Thailand's True Corp. In addition, Fox International Channels (FIC) in Asia has acquired the finished episodes in territories including China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam.

The Magicians sees three of leading magicians battle across five weeks. Each magician performs with a different celebrity partner each week.
