Kate Oates has been promoted to head of continuing drama at BBC Studios.

Oates is currently senior executive producer, overseeing the continuing dramas EastEnders, Holby City and Casualty.

Her new role brings Doctors, River City and Pobol y Cwm under her creative leadership too.

Before joining BBC Studios in 2018, she produced ITV’s Coronation Street. Between 2010 and 2016 she worked on ITV’s Emmerdale, rising from story editor to series producer. She previously produced the BBC Radio 4 soap The Archers. Oates started her career as a researcher and editorial assistant for the writer Germaine Greer before joining Carlton Television as a researcher and script editor for Crossroads.

Ralph Lee, director content, BBC Studios said: “Kate is an exceptional talent and I’m delighted she is taking on this important role for BBC Studios.”

Kate Oates said: “Continuing drama is a cornerstone of British television, and the biggest challenge is keeping audiences consistently engaged with brilliant stories that feel fresh and exciting. I love working with all the talent at EastEnders, Holby City and Casualty, and can’t wait to get working creatively with the teams at Pobol y Cwm, Doctors and River City.”
