James Murdoch is to return as chairman of Sky, four years after he stepped down from the job after he was caught up in the phone hacking scandal.

He replaces Nicholas Ferguson, who is stepping down as chairman and as a director of the company after 12 years on the board.

Ferguson led the company as it brought together the Sky businesses across Europe.

James Murdoch previously served as Chief Executive from November 2003 to 2007 and as Chairman from 2007 to 2012.

Murdoch is chief executive of 21st Century Fox, which owns 39% of Sky.

His return will cause speculation that Fox may try to take full control of Sky. Fox was forced to give up on an £8bn-plus bid to take full control of Sky UK in 2011.
