Mipcom: ITV Studios’ Love Island is arguably the most talked about entertainment format at this year’s Mipcom market.

The hit ITV2 show is leading the ITV Studio’s formats slate at this year’s market, and has been commissioned in Sweden by TV4.

The series will be produced by ITV Studios Sweden and will air next year. It follows on from last week’s announcement that Nine Network had commissioned the show in Australia.

It means a fourth territory for the format following the launch of the show on RTL2 in Germany last month, and its stand out third series on ITV2 in the UK over the summer.

The entertainment market has struggled in recent years to find new formats hits like Love Island, relying on long established shows like Strictly Come Dancing, The X Factor, I’m A Celebrity and The Voice to win ratings.

Buyers are also attracted by Love Island’s ability to attract a younger, 16-34 audience which are increasingly hard for broadcasters to bring to their networks.

Mike Beale, Managing Director, Nordics and ITV Studios Global Creative Network said: “We are delighted to be taking Love Island to Sweden. Coming in to the market with two more territories signed-up, coupled with its launch in Germany, there is a strong momentum around the format. The everyday ups and downs of the Islanders is something that younger audiences everywhere can relate to and this makes it an appealing proposition to global broadcasters.”

Fredrik Arefalk, Head of Channels, TV4-Group, said: “The fact that Love Island is a live event, in which our viewers and users can affect the outcome of the show, will contribute greatly to TV4 Play’s position as the natural starting point for new television experiences.”

The series aired on ITV2 this summer averaging 2.5m viewers. Viewing grew every week culminating in 3.1m viewers for the live final, 7.2million tweets across the series, 150million short form views on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Love Island is an original ITV Studios Entertainment format and is distributed internationally by ITV Studios Global Entertainment.
