Factual Festival to feature speakers with US & global clout

This year’s Televisual Factual Festival will feature leading commissioners and producers with knowledge of international commissioning and the US market.

The Festival, which takes place at BAFTA in London’s Piccadilly on the 24th and 25th October, includes a session on international commissioning and another on the US market. There is also a session on international co-production.

Speakers for the International Commissioning session include Ed Sayer, new commissioning editor for National Geographic Channels International, Sarah Davies, vice president of development, Factual Programming for Discovery Networks International and Tracy Forsyth, vice president commissioning, BBC Worldwide Channels.

BBC Worldwide Channels recently announced a trebling of original commissions across its portfolio in 2013. National Geographic is establishing a commissioning hub in the UK for its international network and Discovery is working on a global strategy with shows like Nutopia’s How We Invented the World (pictured), adapted for four international regions.

The Festival’s Masters of the US session sees will hear from British producers with US hits on their hands. Stephen Lambert, chief executive of Studio Lambert is the man behind Undercover Boss, which recently won an Emmy for outstanding reality show. Nick Powell is the managing director of Ricochet, the indie behind Supernanny, American Supernanny and Basketball Wives. Ben Goold is executive producer of Nutopia, which has made mega docs for US networks. And Simon Andreae is senior vice president of development and production, West Coast for the Discovery Channel in the US, who has the view of a UK producer turned US commissioner.

Co-production is Alive and Well will explore international funding opportunites. The panel speakers include Carl Hall, managing director of the newly formed Sky Vision, Lilla Hurst, founder of Lilla Vision, Carlo Massarella, executive producer at Windfall Films and Philipp Schmid, co-production manager for BBC Worldwide who is responsible for co-production investment across Germany and France.
