Owners of Elstree Film Studios Hertsmere Borough Council have announced they are planning to further expand the Elstree site with another stage and ancillary buildings at the front of the existing studios.

The council is now seeking “media and production industry” parties to partner on the new project and eventually operate it.

Plans are already in place to build a 21,000 square foot film stage area (with 26,000 square foot ancillary facilities) at the rear of the Studios site, similar to the George Lucas Stages.

Councillor John Graham, Portfolio Holder for Finance and Property, explained: “We’re now giving consideration to developing another stage for film and television use, with ancillary areas and workshops at the front of the existing site. Obviously this would all be subject to obtaining detailed planning permission, and consultation with local residents and other interested parties.

“We’re flexible about how this additional facility could be provided and we’d welcome early market engagement with any parties that have access to substantial experience of the media and production industry to hear their ideas about how this project could be taken forward.

“Our main aim is to ensure that the Studios site can operate at its maximum capacity, not only so that it remains a highly prestigious facility for the industry but also reaping huge benefits for the borough’s residents.”

Elstree Studios was bought by Hertsmere Borough Council in 1996.
