Large London-based vfx house Cinesite is opening a 26,000 sq ft office in Montréal, which will eventually house 250 artists. A Sohonet pipeline will connect its London and Montréal bases to enable collaborative working on projects.

The studio has cost US$6.7 million to set up, with an initial staff of around 200 vfx artists (an investment in payroll of $42.4 million). As well as working on feature film vfx at the new facility, Cinesite also plans to produce animated films and carry out R&D on its proprietary production tools.

The Québec government has provided Cinesite with a $1.2 million interest free loan to "execute the project."

“Over the past few months Cinesite has been looking at several opportunities for international expansion," explains Antony Hunt, md, Cinesite. "Montréal has a thriving gaming, software and technology community, which has been making a natural extension into visual effects. This burgeoning creative hub, combined with the investment support offered by the government of Québec, makes it the ideal location for us."
“Visual effects have become an increasingly global market," he adds. "This move will allow our clients to leverage local fiscal advantages along with Cinesite’s world-class reputation for visual effects and animation. Content creation in animation is also an important part of our future growth strategy.”
“I'm glad to see another London studio has chosen Québec as its key partner in North America. With Cinesite, Montréal is now home to three of the world’s premier visual effects studios. This will further consolidate the cluster and broaden the synergy between industry stakeholders,” believes Pauline Marois, Premier of Québec.

The first production to be posted in Cinesite's new Montréal office is the forthcoming Guy Ritchie film The Man From U.N.C.L.E., for Warner Bros. Cinesite is currently recruiting for the new Montréal studios - find out more here.
