BriteSpark Films has hired Channel 4 Commissioning Editor Tom Porter as its new Director of Programmes.

As Director of Programmes, Porter will oversee the new slate of programming as well as bring in new and popular commissions. His focus at BriteSpark will be on the UK market.

As Commissioning Editor at Channel 4, where he worked for six years, Porter was based in both Specialist Factual and News and Current Affairs, with commissions ranging from Guy Martin series to BAFTA-winning current affairs.

During that time his key commissions included the BAFTA/ RTS News/ Grierson/ Emmy-winning ‘Syria Across the Lines’; Grierson-winning ‘Hunted’, ‘Our Guy in China’/’Guy vs the Robot Car’; ‘The World’s Most Expensive...’; ‘Mystery of the Man on the Moor’; ‘Dogs: Their Secret Lives’; the BAFTA-nominated North Korea - Life Inside the Secret State’; ‘Politicians for Hire’ , ‘Facebook: Inside the Social Network’ and joint responsibility for the forthcoming Michael Jackson doc ‘Leaving Neverland’.

Previously Porter worked as an Executive Producer at Blakeway where he managed the Dispatches slate for four years, and before that as a freelance Producer/Director, making films for Channel 4, BBC, ITV, Sky One and NHK at companies including Quicksilver, Brook Lapping and October films.  He began his career as a PA/Runner at Mentorn Barraclough Carey.

Tom Porter said: ‘I’m excited to join such a great company at a key moment in its development.  I have enjoyed an amazing time at Channel 4 but am thrilled at the opportunity to work with Nick and his team to build on their exciting slate.’

Nick Godwin, Creative Director at BriteSpark, said: “Tom’s heavyweight credentials combining journalistic rigour and populist flair make him the perfect fit for BriteSpark as we continue to grow in scale and ambition. He will be a great asset to the team.”

Porter will take up his position in April.
