Blakeway Productions is to make co-production Japan and Korea: Ties That Bind (2x60’) with Japan’s biggest digital video platform, Niconico.
It will be the first programme to air on a new current affairs and history strand on the platform called Niconico Documentary.
Niconico has launched Niconico Documentary today.
Niconico Documentary will show documentaries from around the world, distributing them online prior to the titles airing on Japanese terrestrial TV. Japan and Korea: Ties That Bind, directed by Ben Ryder, depicts the difficult relationship between the two neighbouring nations from an international perspective. Following the streaming of each episode, Niconico Documentary will air a talk show featuring a panel of experts who will analyse and discuss the documentary, as well as a commentary program that will further explore themes covered in the documentary. Viewers will be able to discuss the programme via a designated website.
Fiona Stourton, Creative Director, Ten Alps TV & Radio, says: “NicoNico is phenomenally successful in Japan and it is an honour for Blakeway to be part of this new launch. We have enjoyed working on Japan and Korea: Ties That Bind with Niconico, taking on the challenging task of exploring the intricacies of the fraught relationship between the two nations for an Asian audience. Blakeway prides itself on creating high-quality factual programming with journalistic integrity to engage viewers and inspire discussion. The NicoNico platform is well suited to broadening debates and opening dialogue, we’re particularly excited by the expert talk show and commentary show that will accompany the two episodes, and hopefully encourage a robust multi-media dialogue with viewers. We hope this is the first of many collaborations between Niconico and Ten Alps.”
Niconico, owned by Japanese telecommunications and media company Dwango Company Limited, is Japan’s leading video-sharing website, with 41m registered members.
