Directors Errol Morris and Beeban Kidron have each been commissioned to make feature length documentaries for Sky's new documentary features strand Footprint.
Kidron, director of Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, is working on In Real Life (working title), a Cross Street Films/Studio Lambert production, with multi platform from Maverick. The film explores what it is like to grow up in public, and how modern youths create a sense of identity. She looks at a world where each Western teen is the subject of their own virtual world, an object of others and, at all times, a spectator of all.

While Morris, director of The Thin Blue Line, is making The Unknown Known: The Life and Times of Donald Rumsfeld, which is produced by Moxie Pictures for History Films/ Radius-TWC / Participant Media, in association with BSkyB. The film takes a look at one of America’s most controversial public figures, from his early childhood memories of Pearl Harbor to his two tenures as US Secretary of Defense. It will be both a character study and an historical narrative.
The films join two previous announced films for Footprint, Nick Broomfield’s South Central (w/t) and acquired film Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry.
Elaine Pyke, Director of Sky Atlantic, said: “Footprint is, above all, about stories. Stories that grip and aren’t afraid to force viewers to question everything they think they know about a subject.   We are working with some of the biggest names in documentary and aren’t afraid to tackle controversial subjects.”
Up to twelve peak time landmark documentaries will form the backbone of the Footprint strand. With the ambition for Sky Atlantic to become the home of world-class documentary films and film makers, the brief is out to the world’s best documentary makers to come to the channel with bold ideas.
