An average audience of 8.4 million watched Frances Quinn crowned winner of The Great British Bake Off on BBC Two, making it the channel’s best performing programme since the current measuring system was introduced in 2002.

Janice Hadlow, controller, BBC Two, said: “This has been a fantastic series of The Great British Bake Off and I’m thrilled that it finished last night on such a high.”

With an overnight share of 32.6%, the programme beat BBC Two’s next best performing programme in the same period, a 2007 episode of Top Gear, by over 400,000 (Top Gear on 04/03/2007 averaged 8.0m/29.8%).

The five-minute peak for Bake Off was 9.1m/34.1%.

Last week the BBC announced that the show would move onto BBC One for its next run.
