Rhythm & Hues, the special effects company which won a Bafta for its work on Life of Pi on Sunday, is filing for bankruptcy protection.

The Californian-based company, which is also up for two Oscars - for Life of Pi and for visual effects on Snow White and the Huntsman, has filed for Chapter 11 protection in the US.

Prime Focus has shown interest in buying the company, but a deal failed to materialise, despite reports of a deal to avoid bankruptcy with a $20m loan from three studios.

Rhythm & Hues credits also include vfx on features The Golden Compass and Babe.
