The British Film Institute has re-launched its BFI Player with a second generation platform offering new services and a richer, more cinematic experience.

Digital agency Ostmodern has built the platform using Skylark, an innovative technical backend framework designed to meet the BFI’s current and future needs.

The service includes a mix of free and transactional HD video on demand content that will continue to grow over time, and Ostmodern partnering with Ooyala to ensure the BFI benefit from Ooyala’s digital rights management system.

70% of premium content has been captured in high definition, and at launch 60% of the content will be available for free with premium content making up 40% of the catalogue.

Prices for premium content range from just £1 for shorts with features starting at £2.50 and a range of titles released day-and-date with cinemas priced at up to £10.

Viewers will have 30 days to watch their purchase and a 48 hour window to re-watch movies once they are first viewed.

BFI Player’s key features will include collections curated by the BFI, a film of the day linked to a key topical event, celebration or anniversary, free content and a 'did you know' file, where facts, anecdotes and stories about the movies will be added by BFI experts enriching the experience for viewers each time they click on a new title.

The re-launch follows a consultation with 1,000 BFI Player users.

Ostmodern UX director Tom Williams said: “We’ve put UX and curation at the heart of the product, equipping the BFI’s team with flexible and sophisticated editing tools. This enables them to curate groups and collections that dovetail with genres, interests, special events, seasons and festivals throughout the year”.

The new BFI Player launches today and throughout November the Player will be dedicated to some of the best Sci-Fi movies ever created including a new catalogue of iconic movies from Universal Pictures.

The collection, Sci-Fi: Days of Fear and Wonder presented together with O2, gives BFI Player users, for the first time, a chance to experience a BFIblockbuster season online.
