BBC1 named channel of the year at Edinburgh TV Festival

BBC1 has won the channel of the year award at the Edinburgh TV Festival, at a ceremony hosted by comedian Frankie Boyle.

BBC1 saw off competition from BBC2, BBC3, Sky Atlantic and ITV after a year in which it has broadcast shows including included The Missing, Strictly Come Dancing and Bake Off.

Red Production Company was named Production Company of the Year. The judges cited Red for producing ‘the most acclaimed, innovative and award winning dramas’ of the past 12 months, including Cucumber, Banana and Tofu for C4, E4 and 4oD, and Last Tango in Halifax for BBC1.

Red’s drama series Happy Valley was named New Programme of the Year.

The Best Online Innovation Awards went to Reverse the Odds for C4’s Stand Up to Cancer show.

Hartswood Films founder Beryl Vertue won the The Lifetime Achievement Award, which collected in her absence by Sherlock star Martin Freeman.
