The Grierson Trust

Established in 1972, The Grierson Trust champions factual filmmaking and is responsible for the annual British Documentary Awards, the biggest event in the UK documentary calendar. More fondly known as The Griersons, the awards commemorate the pioneering Scottish documentary filmmaker John Grierson (1898 – 1972), famous for Drifters and Night Mail and the man widely regarded as the father of the documentary.

The awards recognise and celebrate documentaries from Britain and abroad that have made a significant contribution to the genre and that demonstrate quality, integrity, creativity, originality and overall excellence. This year, the ceremony will take place on the evening of Thursday, 14 November 2019 at Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank, London.

The Trust also runs an annual training scheme for aspiring documentary filmmakers between 18-25yrs called The Grierson DocLab, supported by The Rank Foundation. DocLab is made up of a week-long residential course comprising workshops and masterclasses from industry experts as well as mentoring support and funded training opportunities with the UK's leading independent production companies. .
