Skins
E4, Company Pictures
Skins is a drama all about young people produced for young people and needs a soundtrack that will gel with that audience. The music is one of the major stars of the show. Its importance to the audience is underlined by E4’s provision of a handy guide to all the tracks used within the series. And that listing is nothing if not eclectic with everything from Bach to Johnny Cash to Feist, LCD Soundsystem, Crystal Castles, Sigur Rós, Arcade Fire and Vampire Weekend. Composed music was by Fat Segal (Matthew Simpson) and the tracks were chosen by Alex Hancock. The show’s producer was Chris Clough, the directors were Aysha Rafaele, Simon Massey, Harry Enfield and Charles Martin and the executive producers were George Faber, Charlie Pattinson and Bryan Elsley.

Ashes to Ashes
BBC1, Kudos
As with the original Life on Mars, the whole show is named after a famous song of the era, so it’s not surprising that music plays a major part. The music not only does all the things music has to do to assist a great drama, but also parachutes the viewer straight into another era. The show’s makers had a lot of fun with the fashions and products of the time, and they had fun with the music too that included The Clash, The Stranglers, Duran Duran, Ultravox, OMD and Visage.
3rd
Britain From Above
BBC, Lion Television
The show saw Andrew Marr take to the skies to provide the viewer with breathtaking views of the UK from a very different perspective. The score was breathtaking too with original music by David Schweitzer. The exec producer was Lion’s Nick Catliff, the series producer was Lucy van Beek, the producer/directors were Cassian Harrison, Nic Young, Mark Radice and Chris Mitchell and the producers were Lucy Haken, Rob Barnes, Nicola Lloyd and Michelle Feuerlicht.
