Andrew Marr’s A History of Modern Britain
May, BBC2, (BBC)
The modern history programme’s very healthy ratings came as something of a surprise, even to the BBC, who found themselves with a major hit on their hands as journalist and presenter Andrew Marr took the viewer through the major aspects of post war British history in very straightforward, but extremely compelling, decade long chunks. There were no bells and whistles nor any flashy format pushing in the programme and the large number of viewers that tuned in to watch seemed to appreciate this refreshing change. The series producer was Chris Granlund. Tom Giles was the producer/director on programmes one and five. Fatima Salaria was the producer/director on programme two, Francis Whateley was the producer/director on programme three and Robin Dashwood was the producer/director on programme four. The team is now to make a follow up series, again fronted by Marr, that will trace British history from 1900 to 1945.

Earth: Power of the Planet
November, BBC1, (BBC)
After 2006’s Planet Earth, this series stepped up as the BBC’s flagship natural history blockbuster for 2007 aiming to tell the story of how the Earth was formed from its birth 4.6 billion years ago. It was presented by the massively enthusiastic and somewhat gung-ho geologist Dr Iain Stewart with each episode revealing a different force critical to the development of Earth including volcanoes, the ocean, the atmosphere and ice. Phil Dolling was executive producer, it was commissioned by Emma Swain.
