PANEL QUIZ AND CHAT SHOW

QI

September, BBC 2, (Talkbackthames)

QI, created and produced by John Lloyd, presented by Stephen Fry and featuring regular panellist Alan Davies was still rolling out its succession of quite interesting, lesser known and generally very funny facts to great effect in this, the fifth series of the show. And this particular series was all about quite interesting information about Exploration, Entertainment, Elephants, Espionage and anything else beginning with the letter E. Guest panellists included Bill Bailey, Rob Brydon, Jimmy Carr, Jo Brand, Sean Lock, Rich Hall, Phill Jupitus, Doon Makichan, Dara O’Briain, Jeremy Clarkson, Vic Reeves, Clive Anderson, Johnny Vegas and David Mitchell. The BBC’s Katie Taylor and Talkbackthames’s Lorraine Heggessey were the executive producers. Research for the sixth series, series F, has already begun and the show has already given birth to a succession of books, DVDs, websites and a club in Oxford.

Never Mind the Buzzcocks

November, BBC2, (Talkbackthames)

The 21st series of the comedy music quiz, but just the second with new host Simon Amstell at the helm, a casting that has reinvigorated the format and allowed it to reach new heights of sarcasm. Despite complaints that Amstell had softened mid series, he rallied and was again fabulously horrible to any z-listers who dared to appear. Never Mind The Buzzcocks is produced by Stu Mather, and executive produced by Jim Pullin. The series is commissioned for the BBC by Katie Taylor.

Are You Smarter Than a 10 Year Old?

October, Sky One, (Twofour)

Indie Twofour brought in the resurgent presenter Noel Edmonds to front the UK version of this US format for its Sky One run out where adult contestants have to pit their wits against a set of questions originally meant for the textbooks of ten year old kids. There were two versions of the quiz on Sky One, a weekly edition that went out in primetime hosted by Edmonds and a daily daytime show hosted by ex Saturday morning kids’ show presenters Dick and Dom.
